Contenuti | La prima parte del corso verterà sui fondamenti epistemologici della disciplina filologica e sui suoi sviluppi in alcune fasi cruciali della sua storia: il periodo alessandrino; il periodo umanistico; l’Ottocento con il consolidarsi della filologia come scienza e il metodo stemmatico di Lachmann fino ai recenti sviluppi novecenteschi. La seconda parte riguarderà le questioni legate alle modalità di produzione e trasmissione di un testo antico e alle finalità e fasi della critica del testo (tipologie di errori, la teoria stemmatica, l’apparato critico, l’edizione critica). Seguirà poi la lettura, la traduzione e il commento di testi in lingua latina e greca – Tucidide, La guerra del Peloponneso, libro I; Omero, Odissea, libro II; Tacito, Annali, libri I-II; Ovidio, Amori, libro I. |

Contents | The first part of the course will focus on the epistemological fundamentals of philological science and on the main steps of its history: the Alexandrian period; Humanism; the birth of scientific philology and modern critical edition in the 19th century and the major contributions given to the philological method in the 20th century. The second part will concern the main issues related to the production and transmission of classical texts and the scope and stages of textual criticism (typologies of errors, stemmatic theory, critical apparatus, critical edition).Then the reading, translating and analyzing texts in Greek and Latin languages – Thucydides, History of the Peloponnesian War, book I; Homer, Odyssey, book II; Tacitus, Annals, books I-II; Ovid, Loves, book I – will be following. |

Course objectives | 1. Knowledge and understanding: knowledge and understanding of the history of classical philology in its main developments from Antiquity to the present; knowledge of practices of production, publication and dissemination of texts in the ancient world; understanding of the process of constructing a critical text. |
Prerequisites | Basic knowledge of the Latin and Greek language. |
Teaching methods | The course mainly consists of frontal lectures. Forms of student’s active participation and interaction will be promoted. |
