Contents | The course aims to provide students with general knowledge of the history and archaeology of Minoan and Mycenae in the period between the 3rd and the end of the 2nd millennium BC, as well as more detailed knowledge of the social and economic organization of these civilizations. In this context, students will be given basic knowledge of the historical and cultural background of the Aegean civilizations, from the egalitarian social organization of the end of the Neolithic to the transegualitarian society of the Ancient Bronze Age, until the emergence of a highly hierarchical society founded on the Palaces during the Middle Bronze Age and the appearance of the new historical-cultural panorama of the late Bronze Age. Students will be provided with general knowledge on the introduction, characteristics, use and circulation of phonetic scriptures in use in Crete and on the Greek mainland between the Middle and Late Bronze Age. Finally, particular attention will be given to the question of the ways, times and characteristics of the expansion of Mycenaean civilization in the Eastern Mediterranean, as well as to the investigation of the possible causes that, at the end of the Bronze Age, led to collapse of the Mycenaean political and economic system, to reach the threshold of the historical age in Greece. |

Course Syllabus | The course offers students the essential tools for the framing of Minoan and Mycenaean civilizations, developed in the basin of the Aegean in the chronological period between the end of the Neolithic and the last centuries of late Bronze (III millennium - XII century BC) in Crete, on the Greek Continent and in the Cyclades. The reconstruction of the historical-political and economic landscape in which these civilizations are inserted will be carried out through the analysis of the evidence provided by the archaeological testimonies and historical and epigraphic sources, the latter fundamental to reconstruct an exhaustive historical picture for the last phase of late Bronze. |
